Abstract

The Rosso Ammonitico Veronese (RAV) Formation is a condensed pelagic limestone including, at different horizons, laminated facies which have previously been interpreted as stromatolitic. Some samples of these limestones from the Verona area (Western Veneto, Italy) were studied in thin and polished sections and organic compounds were extracted by the analytical method of Chichereau and Trichet (1976). The amino acids of the laminated facies are consistent with the composition of the cell wall of modern and fossil cyanobacteria and thus confirm its stromatolitic nature.
