Abstract

EMPLOYING a technique which at the time was far from being perfect, we were able in 1941 to demonstrate the general importance of amino-acids in connexion with the maintenance and growth of tissue cells1. It was found that cystine occupies a key position among the amino-acids ; if absent from a diet that contains all the other amino-acids, the cells cannot be kept alive, but die within twenty-four hours. The relative significance of the other amino-acids could not at the time be tested similarly, because of the imperfection of our technique.
