Abstract

Amici curiae interventions meet the aim of the Rio Declaration's Principle 10, which promotes access to judicial proceedings, representing a worldwide opportunity to advance the protection of public interests in environmental adjudication. In order to disseminate this opportunity, a concrete example of ecosystem services (ES) is offered to enhance the amicus curiae's role in protecting public interests, as well as an analysis of factors affecting the chances to successfully file amici curiae briefs country by country. The study shows that there are many opportunities worldwide for amici curiae if aiming to support judges' decision-making on environmental controversies.
