Abstract

This paper describes a broadband networking concept toward the multimedia age. We propose an ATM-based integrated platform named AMICS (ATM-based Multimedia Information and Communication System). The AMICS provides a full range of multimedia services including not just CATV and video on demand but also all broadband communication services such as video conferencing, distance learning and high-speed data communications. The AMICS integrates wired broadband access networks, wireless broadband access networks, and regional transport networks. Utilizing ATM-based technologies, the AMICS allow a smooth network evolution toward an ATM-based telecommunication platform for the next century.
