Abstract

Many secure sites, despite possessing state-of-the-art perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS), experience excessive numbers of false alarms during periods of extreme weather. The AMETHYST (AutoMatic Event auTHentication sYSTem) project aimed to encourage the development of a system to enhance the performance of perimeter intrusion detection systems. It was to do this by automatically examining fixed-camera CCTV pictures from areas protected by PIDS. The system filters out alarms where there was no intruder present in the TV images. AMETHYST was to pass to an operator only those alarms that could have been caused by an intruder, or where AMETHYST was presented with unacceptable imagery and could not make a decision. (7 pages)
