Abstract

This article is a profile of five American women composers active in the field of electronic music: performance artists Laurie Anderson and Pauline Oliveros; Maryanne Amacher, creator of music installations and environments; Maggi Payne, director of the studio at Mills College in California; and software developer Carla Scaletti. Their major electronic works of the period 1984–94 are discussed, with details of performance times and places, compositional inspiration and methods, equipment and instruments used. In the wide range of their activities, approaches, and styles, the five women exemplify the possibilities inherent in this extremely broad genre. A discography is included.
