Abstract

This volume, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Va, the first public hospital for the insane in America, contains 13 papers presented at a conference held in Williamsburg, as well as a general discussion by the participants. The collection offers a concise, brief, and current overview of American psychiatry presented by leading authorities both inside and outside the profession. Norman Dain shows historically how psychiatry tends to be cyclic rather than linear in development. Judge David L. Bazelon cites some reasons for the defensiveness of psychiatrists in the courtroom. Morris S. Schwartz challenges psychiatrists to be more active for social change, and Charles E. Rosenburg warns the profession about its present crisis in social legitimacy.
