Abstract

The US administration under President Donald Trump has started its term with strong rhetoric against the UN. It announced budget cuts and reviews of peacekeeping operations. After three years, the results of its policies are more ambivalent: The US demands for a better peacekeeping performance and the reform of the peace and security architecture have led to positive effects. However, the non-negotiable US positions on performance also threaten to deepen conflicts between the large troop contributor countries. Furthermore, the US government’s continuous pressure to cut peacekeeping budgets risks the UN’s capacity to act as a security provider in areas of conflict.
