Abstract

This chapter discusses the notion of religious imperialism in line with American Catholicism and Philippine colonization. It explains that the US colonization of the Philippines, which lasted for decades, was influenced partially by Catholics seeking to gain power at the expense of Protestants. The colonization forced the confrontation around the Philippines' religious struggles shaped by native Filipinos and Spanish missionaries and colonial officials. The chapter elaborates on the notion that Catholicism was the defender, guarantor, and clearest expression of American nationalism. It explains that the Catholic rhetoric of empire, nation, and race was a fundamental contest for power between Catholics and Protestants.
