Abstract

Burkitt's lymphoma is a lymphoreticular cell malignancy that frequently involves the jawbones of young African children, with high incidence in certain endemic areas of the continent. Cases have also been reported in other parts of the world. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been implicated as an etiologic agent of Burkitt's lymphoma. In this article we report on an unusual expression of a Burkitt's lymphoma, in which the lesion manifested itself as a solitary submandibular mass in a 24-year-old white American man. The tumor was resected, and the patient is currently receiving intensive chemotherapy with the hope of arresting any further manifestation of his disease. Several similarities and differences between the African and the American Burkitt's lymphomas are reviewed.
