Abstract

BEFORE I BEGIN, I want to make a personal declaration, which I always find necessary when I speak about the Vietnam tragedy. The accidents of my life and work have brought me to know and love America well. It is my second, spiritual fatherland. Over the years I have often taken part in the discussion of political issues in America, almost the only one to do so among Europeans in this generation. This seemed natural and I am now in very much the same situation as some of my American friends. Though we are opposed to the Johnson government's war policy in Vietnam, any attempt to classify me, or them, as anti-American falls to the ground as ridiculous.
