Abstract

We discuss the mathematical and physical properties of the Shirley function, which is the totally off-diagonal complement to the Wigner function. It is identified with the moment generating function or the signal ambiguity function. We discuss both the information it contains and its time evolution. The findings are illustrated by specific examples. For mathematical simplicity, we treat only the pure state case in this paper.
