Abstract

This paper analyses those aspects of urban design which have caused ambiguity among academics and professionals and looks for a definition that addresses these uncertainties. The areas of confusion and ambiguity, are analysed in seven arenas: the scale of urban fabric which urban design addresses; visual or spatial emphases; spatial or social emphases; the relationship between process and product in city design; the relationship between different professionals and their activities; public or private sector affiliations and design as an objective-rational or subjective irrational process. This examination will show how to clarify the definition of urban design, its roles and areas of involvement.
