Abstract

THERE is considerable evidence to indicate that in turkeys there is frequently a gradual seasonal decline in fertility. In addition to the pertinent reports reviewed by Smyth and Leighton (1953), one can cite the publication by Dearstyne et al. (1949) in which it is stated that “fertility declines rapidly with the hot weather of June and July.” The studies of Parker (1947) and of Olsen and Marsden (1952) further corroborate the general thesis that during, a normal breeding season (late winter-early summer) there is a definite downward trend in fertility. This trend is characterized first by a rise of fertility to a peak some time in midspring, followed by a gradual decline. In turkey such a decline can be precipitous, causing considerable economic loss.In an attempt to provide at least a partial answer as to the causes of this seasonal pattern in turkey fertility, a study was set up …
