Abstract

The waters near New Zealand are in general characterized by a moderate sea state and low shipping density. The resulting ambient noise is relatively constant over the frequency range 10-1000 Hz. A summary is made of ambient noise collected at various locations in the South Pacific and Tasman Sea near New Zealand. An increase in the biological noise is observed in the morning and evening hours in some locations as well as transients which are attributed to underwater seismic activity and larger sea animals. Comparison is made with data from other ocean areas.
