Abstract

We describe the ambient pressure synthesis of MTaN 2 ( M = Na or K), and the previously unreported, isostructural niobium analogs by the use of an ammonia flow system, starting with either Ta 3N 5 or tantalum metal, or either NbN or niobium metal, respectively, and an excess of the alkali metal amide at 500°C. The products are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. In addition, we describe our attempts to deintercalate NaTaN 2 using NO 2PF 6.
