Abstract

Polyurethane resins are a class of thermosetting Polymers largely used in high performance surface coatings and paints. Fast depletion of petroleum stock and increase in their cost puts limit to their use in future for production of petroleum -based resins. Consequently the need for utilization of renewable resources as substitute to petrochemicals is pressing. We have used the renewable resources in the prepration of polyurethane coatings to reduce VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting polyol and diisocyanate. The polyols used have derived from linseed fatty acid, cellulose based glycoglycosides and epoxy resin where as diisocyanate used is in the form of adduct. Coated films of PU are found to have best physico-chemical and mechanical properties.
