• Deforestation dynamics and urban growth differ among municipalities in the Manaus Metropolitan Region. • Simulated deforestation is distributed close to previously deforested areas and roads. • Protected areas are important to contain deforestation and urban expansion in the Amazon. • The size of simulated urban patches increases in areas with a higher deforestation and near the roads.
