Abstract

SUMMARY Following tooth loss, a reported 25 % of total bone width loss and an overall 4.0-mm decrease in height occur within the first year. Because of this a favorable interarch relation must be restored before endosseous implants can be placed. Alveolar distraction osteogenesis(ADO) is a new tecnique of mandible and maxilla’s augmentation. It is divided in: vertical ADO and horizontal ADO. Vertical ADO is recommended whenever the ratio of required crown height to bone height available for implantation is greater than 1. Horizontal ADO is recommended for narrow rid ge’s augmentation. In the distraction process, there are 3 fundamental sequential phases in which different biologic phenomena are produced: la tency phase, distraction phase, consolidation phase. The complications demonstrated in ADO seem to be minor and manageable. ADO is new and developing technique.
