Abstract

0. W., a 67 year old Negro farmer, was admitted to the University Hospital December 19, 1955, complaining of coughing up blood. His illness began insidiously two months before with a cough and slight shortness of breath. The cough soon become productive of copious amounts of sputum which was almost pure blood. He estimated that he coughed up as much as eight ounces in one night. Dyspnea became progressively worse and marked weakness was noted. Bronchoscopy was done at the Mississippi State Sanatorium on December 7, 1955. There was no evidence of endobronchial disease, and the bronchial washings contained many small clusters of cells which were reported as “suspicious of malignant cells.”
