Abstract

Aluminum foil, 0.0015 inches thick, has been used as a satisfactory material for the construction of boats for casting paraffin blocks. Aluminum has a coefficient of heat conduction of 0.504, as compared to 0.0003 for paper, and 0.0025 for porcelain. The faster heat conduction permits use of partial cooling as an aid to orient specimens. Two wooden forms should be used for rapid construction of smooth-surfaced boats. Some advantages of aluminum foil are: it remains in any position in which folded; the surfaces do not require coating; it is easily removed, or opened and refolded; it is not affected by age or moisture; the boats will float on water; and it is easily labeled.
