Abstract

Aluminizing of titanium alloys and TiAl intermetallic compound were carried out by pack cementation at the temperature between 1073 and 1273K, for 5h in cement powder which was composed of 20% aluminum, 75% Al 2 O 3 and 5% AlF 3 . Compositions and structures of the coating layers were determined by EPMA and X-ray diffraction. The coating layer consisted of mainly of Al 3 Ti layer. Oxidation resistance of these specimens were evaluated by a cyclic oxidation test. The coating layer after the testing was found to be a multilayer structure of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds. The aluminizing remarkably improved the oxidation resistance of the titanium alloys. However, the aluminum in Al 3 Ti phase gradually diffused into the substrate of titanium alloy at high temperature, and it determines the effective life of the coatings.
