Abstract

The experiences with Al2O3-ceramic implants which were designed in order to reconstruct the ossicular chain are reported. Firstly the advantages and failures of autologous and homologous ossicles are discussed (homograft ossicles are still preferred for many cases). The properties of the ceramic implants, the forms of the four designed prototypes and the indications for their use are described. The preliminary results are discussed in respect to the implant compatibility and to the hearing improvement.
