The article examines the proposal advocated in some recent textbooks on pastoral care for a return to the Hebrew Old Testament understanding of the soul in order to gain a new approach to the concept of pastoral care itself. Current Old Testament anthropological research findings on ancient oriental body concepts and linguistic images are brought to bear on this proposal and on the basis of these findings, certain revisions to the proposal are shown to be necessary.
