Abstract

Nowadays, couples face up frequently with infertility, a condition with important psychological, medical, economic and demographic implication. Since 1976, when the first pregnancy after the in vitro fertilization (IVF) of a human egg was reported, assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have continuously evolved, accounting now for 1 to 3 percent of live births. Even though the success rates have increased over time, live birth rates per embryo transfer is only around 30%. This is why alternative therapies for improving in vitro fertilization success rates are under research and under trial. This review summarizes the current alternative therapies used for improving IVF results, according to recent studies from literature. Some alternative therapies aim at reducing the distress, which seems to have a negative impact on the IVF results, while other therapies focus on the administration of substances that could improve oocyte retrieval and embryo transfer success rates.
