Abstract

Both p-nitrophenyl and 4-methylumbelliferyl β-man-nopyranoside are suitable substrates for estimation of β-mannosidase activity in the plasma of goats. Assays using the latter substrate were more sensitive than those using p-nitrophenyl β-D-mannopyrano-side, but the values obtained with both substrates were similar. Application of the p-nitrophenyl β- mannopyranoside assay to Anglo Nubian goats showed that kids affected with β-mannosidosis had the lowest β-mannosidase activity and that their parents had lower activities than most goats.
