Abstract

Amoxicillin taken once a day was as effective as penicillin V taken three times a day for the treatment of group A β-hemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) pharyngitis, a study of 152 children showed. Patients ages 4 to 18 presenting with GABHS pharyngitis were randomly assigned to receive either 250 mg of penicillin V orally three times daily for 10 days (73 children) or 750 mg of amoxicillin orally once a day for 10 days (79 children). The subjects were asked to return for follow-up visits 18 to 24 hours after being seen in a private pediatric office in Connecticut and again four to six and 14 to 21 days after completing the assigned antimicrobial therapy. Results showed no significant difference between the amoxicillin and penicillin V treatment groups in the number of patients with bacteriologic treatment failures.
