Abstract

The classical geodetic reference systems suffer in many cases from severe inconsistencies, mainly due to the fact that they were realised by old type observations. By the use of GNSS, these distortions could be identified implementing a 3D similarity transformation between the old geodetic system and a modern terrestrial reference frame. A similarity transformation is a common solution for the assessment of the classical geodetic reference system. However, low accuracy height information could cause significant distortions to the results of the 3D similarity transformation. In the present study we describe an alternative methodology for a classical geodetic reference system assessment using GNSS and a recent tectonic plate model.
