Abstract

This issue of IEEE Industry Applications Magazine</i> features articles that address the general theme of alternative energy. Historically, the term alternative energy</i> has been used to describe nonconventional sources for electricity generation. We are all familiar with examples of this, including solar photovoltaics (PV), wind, geothermal, biomass. However, the idea that these are alternative is a concept that some feel has passed, with these sources now becoming common. However, it is also a term that is, perhaps, gaining new meaning in other areas. We really need to think about at how we develop energy sources, how we use energy, and how we apply technical knowledge to develop alternative solutions for both sides of this energy equation that benefit humanity.
