Abstract

The photosynthetic membranes of cyanobacteria respond readily to external stresses and stimuli. These responses have provided clues to the functional organization of their membranes. The amounts and ratios of the pigments phycocyanin, chlorophyll and carotenoids were shown to vary with the light quality or intensity during growth (1). These same properties were also influenced by the availability of nitrogen (2) and iron (3). Iron limitation has also been shown to influence the protein composition of cyanothylakoids (4).
