Abstract

In patients on maintenance digoxin Summary therapy propantheline increased serum-digoxin concentrations while metoclopramide lowered them. The results with propantheline were confirmed in medical students taking digoxin in tablet form, but absorption of liquid digoxin was unaffected by propantheline. It is concluded that changes in gastrointestinal motility produced by these agents is the clue to the altered bioavailability of digoxin. Careful control of polypharmacy in patients on digoxin therapy is required.
