Abstract

A histologic and radiographic study of seventeen adult temporomandibular joints was initiated in order to assess factors which may contribute to alterations in joint morphology. Disc perforation was found in five of the specimens, particularly those from females. One case in particular demonstrated a drastic alteration of condylar form which appeared to be associated with a large defect in the articular disc. The extent of this remodeling was not revealed by lateral oblique radiographic projections but was demonstrated by radiographs which outlined the condyle in the near-frontal plane.
