Abstract

Gastroparesis is a chronic motility disorder of the stomach that involves delayed gastric emptying, without evidence of mechanical obstruction. The incidence and prevalence of this condition are considerable. The physiopathology and natural history are not completely understood. The most frequent etiologies are idiopathic, diabetic and postsurgical, however many other pathological conditions can develop this complication. The common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, early satiety, abdominal pain and distension. Testing methods are used to confirm the absence of mechanical obstruction, the presence of underlying disease and of delayed gastric emptying. Gastric emptying scintigraphy is the gold standard, whereas breath test and wireless motility capsule have similar outcomes. The treatment includes different strategies: dietary modifications, nutritional supplements, antiemetic and prokinetic medications, surgical and endoscopic procedures and electrical gastric stimulator placement.
