Abstract

IntroductionThe main function of the esophagus is driving the bolus from the pharynx to the stomach. For this process to be carried out correctly, it is necessary to intervene a complex neuromuscular mechanism that results in a perfect formation of peristaltic waves, coordinated with sphincter dynamics (upper and lower esophageal sphincter), promote the cud antegradely into the gastric cavity. ObjectiveThe main objective of this update is to show the most important disorders esophageal motility: achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm, nutcracker esophagus, hypertensive lower esophageal sphincter and ineffective esophageal motility. MethodExposing the clinical and diagnostic and therapeutic tools available today to address them, paying particular attention to the different (conventional and high resolution) gauge techniques we have for identifying these disorders and their value in choosing the optimal treatment for each case.
