Abstract
We have defined a new gene, alt, which affects RNA synthesis in Escherichia coli. Mutants for alt arise among revertants of strains lacking the CRP-cAMP system necessary for full expression of catabolite-sensitive operons. Studies on a temperature-sensitive alt mutant indicate that the alt gene product is necessary for the synthesis of an important class of messenger RNA molecules.
