Abstract

I HAVE BEEN ASKED to give a speech of caution about alternate degree programs. This seemed, in the abstract, to be a reasonable request, but in practice I have found it very difficult to generalize on the subject of degree programs, for whenever I have tried to apply my cautionary generalizations to any specific degree program with which I am familiar, I have found my remarks to be either untrue, or else obvious to the point of silliness. As a result, I have discarded my formal presentation and have decided instead, very much at the eleventh hour, to read you some correspondence I have received as Executive Secretary of MLA, correspondence which involves a number of specific comments more or less related to the subject. It's a mixed bag, but I have tried to select items that might interest you.
