Abstract

The first publications on cross-reactive carbohydrate epitopes as targets of IgE antibodies to pollen protein appeared over 30 years ago, but in general they were not relevant to pollen symptoms. By contrast, the recently described IgE specific for alpha-gal which is cross reactive over many mammalian molecules, are causally related to two forms of anaphylaxis.
