Abstract

Alpha Gal Syndrome (AGS) is an allergy to mammalian food and medical products indicated by elevated anti-galactose α1,3 galactose (alpha-gal) IgE (>0.1kU/L) due to a tick bite. alpha-gal is a sugar molecule expressed in all mammals except humans and old-world primates. We previously showed that anti-alpha-gal IgE in AGS patient sera reacts with alpha-gal present in bovine/porcine derived medical products. The aim of this study is to quantitate alpha-gal present in cardiovascular bioprostheses and to determine the threshold of serum anti-alpha-gal IgE levels needed to react.
