Abstract. A very high serum concentration of α‐fetoprotein (156 mg/100 ml) was demonstrated in a 62‐year‐old man with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma and liver cirrhosis. The protein produced a distinct band in agarose gel electrophoresis which was indistinguishable from that seen in certain cases of hereditary electrophoretic abnormality of α1‐antitrypsin.
