Abstract

An attempt is made to match the distributions of alpha particles on the surface of doubly even nuclei, calculated from observed branching ratios with the distributions predicted by the shell-model assignments for the outermost nucleons (overlap model). The distributions calculated from the assignments made in case of 228Th, 230U, 234U, 238Pu, 242Cm, 246Cf and 254Fm are compared with semi-empirical ones, with encouraging results. It is concluded that at 242Cm the neutrons start filling at the equator of a prolate spheroidal nucleus rather than at the pole.
