Abstract

The standard alpha disk theory is reviewed with particular emphasis on questions of viscosity where the major uncertainty of accretion disk theory still exists. Non-standard disk topics like time-dependence, thick disks, boundary layer theory etc. are only examined in the light of where the standard disk theory needs to be modified or extended. Applications of alpha disk models are then briefly discussed, in particular dwarf nova accretion and accretion in active galactic nuclei.
