Abstract

The article is devoted to study allusion from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. In this respect, allusion is presented as a cognitive structure that can be studied from the position of conceptual blending theory. As a result, a great attention is paid to the mechanism of conceptual blending. According to this mechanism, allusion is analyzed as a cognitive structure that includes four mental spaces. With the purpose of illustration of conceptual blending mechanism in allusion the example of allusion is taken from the literary work «The sphinx without a secret» by Oscar Wilde. The method of cognitive mapping is applied in the process of analysis.
