Abstract

An isolated island population of field vole, Microtus agrestis L. has been investigated for allzyme variation. During the four-year period of study, the population showed an aberrant demography, in comparison with the neighbouring mainland. The proportion of polymorphic loci was estimated to 44 % which is lower than on the mainland. A small excess of homozygotes was at hand, and significance was obtained only for males and when all loci were pooled. The average heterozygosity, H, calculated on a total of 18 loci was 0.19.
