Abstract
Pliocene seed and fruit floras are described from sand-filled river channels in the browncoal pits “Fortuna-Garsdorf” near Bergheim, “Frechen” near Frechen and “Hambach” near Düren. They include 103 identified species, divided over 71 genera of gymnosperms and angiosperms. One new species based on seeds or fruits is formally described: Oxydendrum europaeum. The floras are compared with Miocene and Pliocene floras from Western, Central and Eastern Europe. A new method for quantitative comparisonso f fossil floras is presented.
