Abstract

This study applied Brickman, Rabinowitz, Karuza, Coates, Cohn, and Kidder's (1982) models of helping and coping to an allocen-trism-idiocentrism framework. The main hypothesis was that the model endorsed would depend upon the level of acculturation. Ninety-eight Republic of China-born individuals completed three measures: the Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation Scale (Suinn, Richard-Fi-gueroa, Lew, and Vigil, 1987); the Individualism-Collectivism Scale (Triandis, 1992); and the Help Vignettes (Mitchell, 1985). The participants were college students attending universities in the Midwest and completed these instruments in group administrations. Analysis of the data found an interaction of model-by-acculturation that approached statistical significance. Suggestions for future research and implications of the present study to the field are also discussed.
