Abstract

Ocular immunology and immunopathology have certainly come of age. We have recently been faced with a flood of articles and a number of books concerning this particular aspect of ocular disease and ocular pathology. The first comprehensive treatise on this subject was published by Boke1from the University of Kiel, Germany. Unfortunately, this important and pathbreaking contribution is not cited by Friedlaender. Boke based his book on numerous personal experiments and contributions, in addition to summarizing previous results in this field. A specific chapter, concerning the immunologic and allergic aspects of uveitis, was the topic of the annual report of the French Ophthalmological Society (which appeared in 1971),2later on translated into English,3and of an American symposium.4 The efforts and results by Boke led to the establishment of an international group on immunology and immunopathology of the eye, which met for the first time preceding
