Abstract

RATIONALE: Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) is a chronic allergic reaction to ubiquitous fungi which causes thick mucoid accumulation in the sinuses. AFS is commonly diagnosed in humid regions such as the southeastern and southwestern United States. AFS occurs in immunocompetent young atopic adults with nasal polyps and persistent sinusitis, despite adequate medical/surgical treatment. The diagnosis requires fungal elements in allergic mucin without tissue invasion. Most patients have elevated total and fungal specific IgE levels.
