Abstract

In 136 patients affected by allergic contact conjunctivitis (ACC) due to eyedrops, patch tests were performed with the standard International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) series, the personal eyedrops, and, when available, the individual constituents thereof. The results show that preservatives (and particularly thimerosal) are the most common sensitizers in eyedrops. Preservative-induced ACC is generally not accompanied with eyelid CD and is frequently associated with a negative patch test to the causative eyedrops. ACC due to the active ingredients of eyedrops is rare, usually associated with eyelid CD, and frequently accompanied with a positive patch test to the causative eyedrops.
