Abstract

Stachybotrys chartarum (synonyms S. atra, S. alternans) has worldwide distribution, but requires a wet substrate for growth. It grows from 2–40°C, but optimally at 23–27°C. S. chartarum is highly cellulolytic and found on seeds, soil, dead plant matter, paper, and textiles.1 Rainfall and high humidity promote contamination of hay, straw, and other cellulose-rich plant material. S. chartarum will grow indoors on damp wallpaper, and attack wet gypsum or particle board.2 During World War II, it spoiled sandbags, fiber board and tents.
