Abstract

A recent article in this JOURNAL reviewed the efficacy of immunotherapy in allergic rhinitis.’ There are fewer studies of immunotherapy in allergic asthma. The use of immunotherapy in asthma remains controversial, and the reasons for this are probably related to difficulties in defining allergic asthma. In this article, an attempt will be made to define allergic asthma and then to discuss the design of an adequate trial of immunotherapy. Finally, the available evidence for efficacy and how this relates to specific indications will be summarized.
